Building a Culture of Kindness through Social Emotional Learning (SEL) at International Christian School Nonthaburi

At International Christian School Nonthaburi (ICSN), we believe in incorporating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as an integral part of our curriculum to nurture emotionally and mentally healthy students from Nursery through Grade 12. The program is designed for the whole child: mind, heart, and character.

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)? ICSN’s Approach to Character Development

Parents searching for quality education in Thailand may be wondering, “What is social emotional learning?” or “Does ICSN have a SEL program?” More than just an anti-bullying movement, SEL adopts a distinct, restorative approach to student behavior and discipline. As a Christian international school in Nonthaburi, Thailand, we emphasize the development of our students’ emotional well-being alongside academic excellence.

Mrs. Bryn, our SEL Coordinator, explains our approach as a holistic educational practice that “equips students with effective tools to help them understand and manage their emotions, foster positive relationships, and make informed, responsible choices.”

While traditional discipline often focuses on correction, SEL shifts the focus from “What punishment fits this behavior?” to “What skill does this student need to learn?” This approach enables discipline to become restorative and educational, a core component of our bullying prevention strategies.

What are the Benefits of Social Emotional Learning?

Social Emotional Learning is incorporated into the classes for its numerous research-backed benefits. Evidences show that it helps improve social and emotional skills, academic performance, mental wellness, healthy behaviors, school climate and safety, and produce lifetime outcomes, including:

  1. Boosting academic achievement. Because SEL fosters a safe and caring environment, student engagement increases, which in turn positively impacts their academic performance, from grades to attendance.
  2. Building the five core competencies. Using the CASEL 5 addresses each student’s need to build the five core competencies that are essential for future readiness, such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
  3. Lasting positive impact. Students who studied in schools with SEL programs maintain better academic performance and form healthy relationships compared to those who did not, even after years of learning them.

Improves overall well-being and mental health. SEL programs enhance students’ coping skills and resilience. Reports indicate a decrease in emotional distress, an increase in safety, and a reduction in aggression in schools.

Social Emotional Learning Alignment with ICSN’s Christian Values

Social Emotional Learning at ICSN deeply aligns with our values as a Christian school in Nonthaburi. The skills and values central to SEL, such as empathy, self-control, resilience, forgiveness, and compassion are evident throughout scripture:

  • Self-awareness and Self-management align with biblical teachings on self-control and renewing our minds (Galatians 5:22-23; Romans 12:2).
  • Relationship Skills mirror Christ’s call to love our neighbor and live at peace (Mark 12:31; Romans 12:18).
  • Social Awareness reflects God’s command to show compassion, kindness, and humility (Colossians 3:12).
  • Responsible decision-making is connected to seeking wisdom and discernment (Proverbs 3:5–6; James 1:5).

Integrating Social Emotional Learning into Daily School Life

Our SEL program teaches these principles in various, age-appropriate ways using established curricula: PurposeFull People and Character Strong.

A strong SEL program creates a supportive classroom environment where students feel respected, valued, and happy.

Pre-school to Elementary School

Nursery, Kindergarten, and Elementary Homeroom teachers lead dedicated SEL lessons using the PurposeFull People curriculum. Every Friday, classes use research-backed, age-appropriate read-alouds, songs, and guided discussions to help students master the 5 CASEL standards.

Secondary School

Secondary students develop essential skills, such as goal-setting, conflict resolution, and leadership, based on the Character Strong curriculum. Each week includes a “Character Dare,” which encourages students to practice these social-emotional skills in real-life situations outside the classroom.

School-Wide Kindness Initiatives

Beyond the classroom, school-wide events reinforce lessons on kindness, inclusion, and resilience, such as Pink Shirt Day and SEL Awareness Week. Secondary students also participate in specialized retreats where they strengthen collaboration and leadership skills.

Prioritizing Student Well-being with Regular Check-Ins and Support

Aside from teaching techniques through lessons, we also prioritize nurturing our students’ well-being by listening directly to them.

Regular Wellness Surveys

Through private wellness surveys conducted three times a year, students answer honest questions like: “Do you feel safe at school? Are you happy here? Do you know what to do when you have a conflict with a classmate?” This information helps our team continually improve our school environment and confirms that every student experiences a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable place to learn.

A Safe Space for Students

Students always have access to the resources they need. Mrs. Bryn’s office serves as a safe space for students who need to take a break, talk, or calm down. Students can also submit a request for an SEL chat at any time.

Practicing SEL at Home: Partnering with Families for Long-Term Success

Families are an essential partner in the SEL program at ICSN. To ensure that the concepts learned in the classroom are reinforced, resources from Character Strong and PurposeFull People are regularly shared with parents. The school also hosts parent workshops where they can acquire tools to strengthen family connections and practice these values at home.

A strong SEL program creates a positive ripple effect: teachers lead more supportive classrooms, parents see stronger family connections, and the entire school community becomes a place where all members feel respected and valued.

Do You Want to Nurture Your Child’s Emotional Intelligence?

The goal of our SEL program is to integrate social-emotional skills into every aspect of school life to help students instinctively manage their emotions, navigate challenges with resilience, and treat others with compassion. These skills have a significant impact on academic performance, behavior, and relationships, so they can thrive both in and out of the classroom.
