LOWER ELEMENTARY

Elementary: G1 – G3

As students move on from Kindergarten and enter Elementary school, ICSN students begin a curriculum that is made up of five core subjects—English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Thai Language Arts, and Thai Social Studies. Students also receive instruction in Physical Education (PE), Music, Art, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Chinese, and Chapel as specials classes for a well-rounded education. Lessons are taught based on state of AERO standards, using US-based textbooks and resources.

Areas of Focus

English Language Arts

  • Notice when a story has a message or lesson for its readers. 

  • Respond directly to what other people say in a conversation.

  • Choose and use words in speech and writing to show appropriate tenses.

  • Draw conclusions and have a clear ending when writing.


Mathematics

  • Understand how counting, addition, and subtraction are related. 

  • Understand that two-digit numbers are made of tens and ones. Use this knowledge to add and subtract. 

  • Understand how to measure the length of objects using non-standard units.

  • Put shapes together and break them apart to create new shapes.


Science

  • Use language and numbers to describe patterns (ex: how the sun moves).

  • Understand seasonal weather changes and how to make predictions.

  • Understand traits of plants and animals and sort them into categories.

  • Explore how light and sound can move through different materials.

English Language Arts

  • Explain the structure of a text (ex: describe how the beginning of a story introduces the characters).

  • Explain the overall purpose of a text.

  • Use knowledge of word parts to figure out meanings.

  • Write opinion pieces about stories or topics of their choice.


Mathematics

  • Understand place value in numbers up to 1,000.

  • Use various methods to add and subtract with numbers up to 1,000.

  • Understand and use standard units and tools of measurement.

  • Recognize and draw shapes with specific characteristics.


Science

  • Understand that different kinds of plants and animals live in different environments and areas.

  • Understand how wind and water can change the shape of land, and how people can prevent those changes.

  • Explore how materials like wood and stone look, feel, and react differently.

  • Formulate questions based on observations and define simple problems that can be solved.

English Language Arts

  • Refer to specific parts of a text when speaking or writing to explain the meaning.

  • Notice differences between literal and figurative language.

  • Organize writing in ways that help readers understand.

  • Improve writing by making changes. Changes can be larger like explaining ideas more fully or smaller like fixing spelling mistakes.


Mathematics

  • Understand multiplication and division and how they are related.

  • Understand fractions and how they represent real-world situations.

  • Understand connections between multiplication and the areas of shapes.

  • Describe, analyze, and compare shapes like rectangles and squares.


Science

  • Understand connections among humans, earth systems, and the environment.

  • Understand the different life cycles of plants and animals.

  • Understand life and environments that existed on Earth long ago.

  • Understand the concept of force and how forces sometimes balance each other out.
